Alfio Mozzi Rosso di Valtellina 2023
Nebbiolo from the steep schist terraces of Valtellina, where the grape is called Chiavennasca and behaves nothing like its Piedmontese cousin. Alfio Mozzi is a third-generation grower in Castione Andevenno on the western edge of the Sassella zone, farming 3.5 hectares of free-draining schist between 350 and 550 meters elevation, much of it on terraces his grandfather built. The Rosso is the entry into his range: lighter on its feet than Sassella, fragrant and high-toned, the kind of mountain Nebbiolo that drinks beautifully young and pairs with everything. A great introduction to alpine Italian reds.
