La Gerla Brunello di Montalcino 2019
In 1975 Sergio Rossi bought a farmhouse and six and a half hectares of vines from Tedina Biondi-Santi ā daughter of the family that effectively invented Brunello ā and renamed the place La Gerla. He became one of the first thirty-five producers ever to bottle Brunello di Montalcino, and the estate has been quietly excellent ever since. Its heart sits in Canalicchio, on Montalcino's cooler northeastern side, where Sangiovese ripens slowly and holds onto its perfume. The 2019 is classic La Gerla: floral and spiced rather than heavy, with the sweet violet and iris aromatics that make Sangiovese from this corner of the hill so recognizable, and tobacco, cinnamon and leather underneath. It's drinking beautifully now and has years ahead of it.
