Roberto Henriquez Bio-Bio Pais Franco 2021

País was Chile's grape for four hundred years before anybody turned up with Cabernet — brought by missionaries, planted everywhere, then dismissed as bulk juice and largely abandoned. Roberto Henriquez is one of the growers who refused to let it disappear. He grew up in Concepción, did his time at big commercial wineries, went to the Loire, spent time working alongside Louis-Antoine Luyt, and came home to farm ancient ungrafted vines in Bío Bío. This bottling comes off an old dry riverbed about 800 meters from the Bío Bío river, where alluvial topsoil sits over black basaltic sand. The name does double duty: pie franco means ungrafted, and franco also means frank — this is the plainspoken, unvarnished version of the grape.
