Verget blends parcels from Vire, Bussieres, Pierreclos and Vergisson to build a Macon-Villages that leads with limestone rather than sunshine. The house was founded in 1990 by Jean-Marie Guffens, the Belgian outsider who reset expectations for what the Maconnais could do, and it is now in the hands of Julien Desplans, whose resume runs through Chateau Palmer and Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. This is generous Chardonnay with a stony spine, ripe fruit answered by real freshness. Honest white Burgundy that does not ask for a second mortgage.
