Pichler-Krutzler Gruner Veltliner Ried Klostersatz 2023

Pichler-Krutzler Gruner Veltliner Ried Klostersatz 2023

Elisabeth Pichler grew up among the greatest Grüner Veltliner vines in Austria — her father is F.X. Pichler, Wachau royalty. Then she married Erich Krutzler, a red-wine guy from Burgenland, and in 2007 the two of them founded their own estate and walked away from the Vinea Wachau classification system entirely. No Steinfeder, no Federspiel, no Smaragd — just organic farming, wild yeasts, and the site speaking for itself. Ried Klostersatz comes off 1970s vines on alluvial Danubian gravel, with part of the fermentation in wood, and it lands somewhere deeper and more savory than the standard-issue peppery Grüner. Think crushed rock and a whisper of white miso rather than fruit salad. This is what Grüner tastes like when nobody is checking a rulebook.
