Domaine Cheveau Pouilly-Fuisse Les Vignes du Hameau 2022
White Burgundy for an era when Meursault has priced itself out of the room. Les Vignes du Hameau is drawn from old parcels clustered in the heart of the hamlet of Pouilly itself, some dating to the family's founding in 1950, on limestone over loamy clay flecked with quartz and flint. Since 2020 Pouilly-Fuisse has had its own premier cru tier of 22 newly recognized climats, and Cheveau bottles several of them, but this wine makes the case that flagship character doesn't require the new label. The cellar work is deliberately hands-off: native yeasts, then 14 months on the lees in 600-liter demi-muids, big enough casks that the oak stays quiet and the stony site does the talking. The 2022 vintage in Burgundy married ripeness to balance, so this is generous now and poised enough to reward a few years in the cellar.
