Erste Lage is Germany's way of saying premier cru, and Klosterberg has earned it. The Spreitzers have farmed in Oestrich since 1641, and this bottling comes from their oldest vines on the site, rooted in slate, quartzite and loess on a slope well above the river. Old vines mean smaller crops and deeper roots, and you feel it here as concentration without any added weight. It is dry, unshowy and precise, with grip on the finish that only vineyards like this deliver. Rheingau Riesling doing exactly what it should.
