Fidele means faithful, and Bertrand Gautherot chose the name to describe the job: report the ground honestly, add nothing. This is his Pinot Noir, grown biodynamically in Buxieres-sur-Arce at the southern tip of Champagne, on the Kimmeridgian limestone that also underlies Chablis. It ferments with native yeasts in barrel and goes into bottle brut nature, meaning no sugar was added at the end to soften the edges. That takes nerve; it also means the wine has nowhere to hide, and this one doesn't need anywhere. If you have written off Champagne as a wine of celebration rather than a wine of place, this is the bottle that argues back.
