Radikon stands alone: no one does it like this Friulian superstar. As Eric Asimov put it, these wines "astound for their purity, their distinctiveness and their almost radical evocation of a pre-modern age." Pignoli is the family's collector cuvee: an obscure Friulian red grape, notoriously low-yielding and unforgiving in the vineyard, that Stanko championed when almost no one else would. The vines grow on clay, marl, and limestone above Oslavia, right against the Slovenian border, farmed without synthetics since 1995. The 2014 has had the long, patient aging in large neutral Slavonian oak botti that Radikon reds demand, and is only being released now. Since Stanko's death in 2016, his son Sasa, wife Suzana, and daughter Ivana have carried the work forward, making the wine the way it has always been made. Drink it as the rare, age-worthy statement it is.
