Proprieta Sperino Lessona 2019
Lessona was once one of Italy's great wine names, and then phylloxera, war and the factory jobs of the industrial north emptied the hills out. Paolo de Marchi — the man behind Isole e Olena in Chianti — came back to his family's ancestral ground with his son Luca in 1999 to bring it back, and Proprietà Sperino is the result: one of the most important vineyard restorations in Italy. The soils here are ancient sea sand, acidic and mineral, and they give Nebbiolo a completely different accent than Barolo does. It's everything you want a Nebbiolo to be: dark red fruits and crushed herbs, with a cooling mineral core.
