En la Rue de Vergy climbs above the grand crus of Morey-Saint-Denis, up where the slope gets steep, the soil turns stony and the wines come out cooler and more aromatic than their famous neighbors below. Virgile Lignier gives it a high proportion of whole clusters and a light touch of oak, which lets the site's lift and perfume come through instead of burying it. Expect red cherry, rose petal and licorice rather than brute power, this is a wine of nerve and detail. It drinks beautifully now with an hour of air and will reward five to ten years in the cellar. A village wine with premier cru manners.
