Krya Vayots Dzor Sev Areni 2021
Vayots Dzor is the region where archaeologists dug up the world's oldest known winery, a 6,000-year-old operation in the Areni-1 cave, and people there are still making wine from the Areni grape. Krya is the project of Tatevik Gabrielyan and Jean-Paul Berger, who rebuilt her family's old cheese factory into a winery surrounded by 70-year-old vines, and who farm with no pesticides or chemicals. Sev Areni is the darker-skinned strain, deeper in color and firmer in structure than standard Areni, aged here in Armenian oak. Expect forest floor, tart red fruit and herbs rather than plush and polished. This is a genuine adventure bottle, and one of the more compelling arguments that Armenia deserves your attention.
