Krya Vayots Dzor Poqr 2022
Tatevik Gabrielyan grew up in Vernashen, left Armenia at eighteen to study winemaking in Switzerland, met her partner Jean-Paul Berger there, and came home to make wine on her grandfather's abandoned vineyards. The winery is an old cheese factory built on 70-year-old vines, and it's named Krya, Armenian for turtle: wisdom, patience, longevity. Poqr means "small," and it's a red field blend of Areni alongside grapes most of us have never heard of, Movuz, Tozot and Sev Kharji, farmed without pesticides or chemicals in Vayots Dzor, a few miles from the cave where archaeologists found the world's oldest known winery. It's earthy, herbal and berried, and it tastes like nowhere else. Drink it for the adventure, stay for the wine.
