Melon de Bourgogne is the grape of Muscadet, and finding it in California is genuinely rare. The Schultzes source theirs from Rodnick Farm in the Chalone AVA, a high-elevation south-facing site planted in 1985 that overlooks the Salinas Valley. Warm days, cool nights, and a coastal pull give the wine a mineral spine that nods toward its Loire homeland while still tasting unmistakably Californian. Native ferment in neutral cooperage keeps everything transparent. If you love Muscadet, this is the closest thing to it grown stateside.
